Kendall Ryan is one of my favorite authors, but when I read the synopsis and saw that the hero was synthetic, I definitely had my reservations. Could I really fall for a hero who wasn’t human? The answer, apparently, is yes—because Aiden completely won me over!
Ruby Hart’s life isn’t going according to plan. Her bakery is struggling, her ex has just gotten engaged, and her mother refuses to give up on finding her a date. The last thing Ruby expects is for a gorgeous, naked man to crash into her life—especially one with no memories, no belly button, and a control panel hidden beneath his ribs.
Aiden is a decommissioned companion synth who knows very little about human behavior. He doesn’t understand sarcasm, personal boundaries, or why watching Ruby sleep might be considered creepy. What he does understand is that Ruby matters to him.
Aiden was sweet, unintentionally hilarious, and completely devoted to Ruby. He notices when she hasn’t eaten, helps around her home, researches the things she cares about, and wants nothing more than to make her life easier. For someone who isn’t technically human, he is more thoughtful than many human heroes! His love of dogs made him even more adorable.
Ruby is kind, hardworking, and used to handling everything on her own. I loved watching her slowly let Aiden into her life and accept that she deserved someone who would truly see and support her.
When Ruby takes Aiden to a family wedding as her fake boyfriend, the story becomes even more entertaining. Their chemistry is anything but artificial, and Aiden’s limited understanding of social situations leads to plenty of funny and awkward moments. Naturally, pretending to be a couple soon starts to feel very real.
The unusual premise requires an open mind, but once I stopped questioning the logistics and simply went along for the ride, I had so much fun. Beneath the humor, spice, and wonderfully chaotic situations is a surprisingly heartfelt story about what makes someone human—and whether love has to be logical to be real.
The Boyfriend Algorithm is quirky, sweet, sexy, and full of heart. Aiden may not have a heartbeat, but he still managed to steal mine. If you enjoy fake dating, forced proximity, devoted heroes, found family, and romances that are a little outside the box, this one is definitely worth picking up!
