It’s been quite a while since I last picked up a Sawyer Bennett book, and King had been sitting on my review list for much longer than I care to admit. While it wasn’t one of my favorite books in the Pittsburgh Titans series, it was still an enjoyable hockey romance that kept me entertained from beginning to end.
Jack “King” Kingston is the newest defenseman on the Pittsburgh Titans, but instead of meeting Willa Montreaux at the arena, he finds her coaching her young niece’s peewee hockey team. The only problem? Willa knows very little about hockey. After seeing her deal with an overbearing hockey parent with far more grace than most people would manage, King offers to help coach the team. What starts as a simple offer soon turns into a friendship, and before long, both of them realize there’s something more developing between them.
King was easily my favorite part of the story. He’s genuine, thoughtful, and emotionally mature, which made him incredibly easy to like. Even though he’s younger than Willa, he never came across as immature. Instead, he was patient and understanding, giving her the space she needed while quietly showing her that not everyone would let her down.
Willa’s hesitation made perfect sense after everything she’d been through. Her previous marriage had left her questioning her own worth, and although there were moments when I wanted her to stop overthinking and simply trust King, her fears felt believable rather than frustrating. I appreciated that her healing wasn’t rushed and that their relationship developed at a natural pace.
The age-gap romance was handled well and never felt like it overshadowed the story. Instead, the focus stayed on two people getting to know each other, building trust, and finding happiness when neither of them was really looking for it. Their chemistry was undeniable, and the romance struck a nice balance between sweet moments and plenty of steam.
One of the things I continue to enjoy about the Pittsburgh Titans series is seeing familiar faces pop up throughout the books. It always feels like catching up with old friends, and those appearances help tie the series together without taking the spotlight away from the main couple.
Overall, King was a sweet, easy-to-read hockey romance with a lovable hero, an engaging romance, and a satisfying happily ever after. It didn’t end up being one of the standout books in the series for me, but I still enjoyed spending time with these characters. If you’re already a fan of the Pittsburgh Titans or enjoy sports romances with an age-gap relationship, supportive hero, and plenty of heart, I think this one is worth adding to your TBR.
