I am loving the Lies, Hearts & Truths series. If you are familiar with Helena Hunting’s books, you are already aware that her books are usually sweet, steamy, and light. When she first announced she will be using H. Hunting’s name for her new series, I didn’t understand why she wanted segregation but now I do. The Lies, Hearts & Truths series is a bit different than her other books. They are filled with emotion, angst, and heartbreak but it still contains her signature quirky sense of humor and sweet moments. Bitter Sweet Heart is the second book of the series which features Maverick Waters.
Maverick is starting his senior year and he is constantly reminded by his father that he needs to be focused on hockey. So, at the end of his summer break when a hot woman floats by their lake house, he decides to end his summer with a hot one-night stand sounds like the best idea ever. After a steamy night, he wants to see her again but knows that won’t be possible until he runs into her in one of his classes. After going through hardship, Clover Sweet needs a fresh start. When she got a one-year teaching contract from a prestigious college in Chicago, she jumps at the opportunity. What Clover didn’t see coming is her hot one-night stand becoming her student for the semester. Clover has a big challenge in front of her, she needs to keep her distance and the boundaries in place, but it would be pretty hard with Maverick’s flirtatious and charming personality. I loved their chemistry and how they helped each other heal. My heart is broken for both of them. Even though Maverick seems like he is always happy and supportive, beneath the persona he shows everyone, he struggles with anxiety and guilt. Clover helps him to open up and fight his demons from the past. As for Clover, she has her demons and insecurities to fight but together they are stronger.
Maverick and Clover’s connection blew me away. Even though they are at different stages in their lives, they fit together. There will be some struggles in their relationship, but their journey together is heartbreaking, inspiring, and hopeful. One of the things that blew me away about this book was BJ. I cannot wait to get my hands on his story. I hope we don’t need to wait too long for it.
