Review: Lies & Lullabies by Sarina Bowen

I love Sarina Bowen and read all her books. When I saw the Hush Note series, I was super excited. The series is a collaboration by Sarina Bowen, Devney Perry, and Rebecca Yarros and each book will be written by a different author. Even though I never read Devney Perry or Rebecca Yarros after seeing Sarina Bowen, I was all in and it has been a while since I read Rockstar romance :).

Jonas and Kira met in a small town in Maine. Jonas was trying to hide from his rockstar life and recharge, alas instead of using his first name, he decided to use his middle name. What he didn’t take into account was Kira. Even though he was attracted to her, he decided to be her friend since it has been forever since someone become his friend without ulterior motives. Kira also faced a traumatic event recently, so she was back in her hometown to recover from it. They both needed a friend and finding each other made that summer a blast. Jonas being the sweet caretaker himself, he couldn’t say no to helping her and try to put her back together, even when it includes spending a one blissful night with her. After their night together, Jonas has to leave for the west coast, back to his band and Rockstar life.  After five years Jonas still cannot get Kira or the summer they spend out of his mind. Now that his band is getting ready to start their new album and their tour has couple days off, he decides the best way to recharge is to go to Nest Lake, Maine. He wants to re-live the summer he had for Kira. At first, everything seems like it was five years ago. However, soon he will realize one night of bliss five years ago will shake him to his core and change his life forever. Kira never thought visiting his dad for the weekend will reveal his well-kept secret, her baby daddy. Yeap, her one night with a Rockstar left her with an adorable baby girl, Vivi. OMG! She is soooooo cute, I loved her and all the scenes including her was super entertaining. Kira is an amazing mother, even though I was pissed at her for hiding the baby from her father, I can somehow understand her reasoning but still. I felt bad for everything she went through after her pregnancy became the news of the town but it still doesn’t give her to hide the baby from her father. Now that Jonas is there and knows that he has a daughter, their life will take a new turn. Their happily-ever-after won’t come easily since they have too many issues to resolve and get past, but they will eventually find a way to work things out.

I had a hard time deciding about my rating for this book. I enjoyed it but it felt like something was missing. Some parts of the story felt like slow motion and I couldn’t get into the story. It was kind of disappointing not to get more background info on Jonas’s life and the same also goes for Kira. It felt like before his rockstar life, there was nothing. Yes, you will get to know the tragic event he had to endure during his childhood but that is it. I think this might be one of the reasons I really couldn’t connect with the story. I am not even sure what trope this book falls into, there are too many to pick from, rockstar, second-chance, small town, secret baby 🙂 As for the band members, I am not sure if they just tolerate each other or if they care for one another. I didn’t get the bandmate vibe from them, they felt disconnected. I am still looking forward to reading Quinn and Nixon’s stories, maybe it will reveal some of Jonas’s past as well. My favorite side characters for the book are Ethan, the tour manager, and Adam, Kira’s brother. They were both amazing characters and I am hoping for a novella for them 🙂

  • Would I recommend this book: Yes.
  • Would I re-read this book: Maybe.
  • Would I read future books by this author: Yes.
