When I first started The Hazard and the Hitman, I expected a fun MM romance with a bit of action. What I didn’t expect was to completely fall in love with these characters and end up staying awake far too late because I couldn’t stop reading “just one more chapter.”
This story turned out to be such a perfect mix of humor, danger, chaos, and heart.
Hazier “Haz” Maddox might genuinely be one of the most lovable disasters I’ve ever met in a book. He’s clumsy, anxious, and somehow constantly managing to injure himself in the most ridiculous ways. But underneath all that chaos is a huge heart and an openness that makes him impossible not to root for. Haz has this warmth and sincerity that draws people in—even people who are absolutely determined to keep everyone at a distance.
Which brings us to Kieran.
Grumpy, controlled, and used to a life surrounded by danger, Kieran is the complete opposite of Haz. An ex-military hitman who thrives on order and discipline, he’s not exactly the kind of man who welcomes chaos into his life. Unfortunately for him, Haz seems to be chaos personified.
Their first meeting is honestly hilarious. A hospital escape attempt, a fake boyfriend situation, and the realization that the rude guy from the dating app is actually the man helping you escape? Absolute chaos in the best possible way. From that moment on, watching these two collide was endlessly entertaining.
Haz’s sunshine personality and accidental magnet-for-trouble tendencies clash perfectly with Kieran’s grumpy, hyper-protective nature. The banter between them had me laughing out loud more than once, but beneath the humor there’s also real tension building between them. As the danger surrounding Haz grows and the mystery behind it begins to unfold, their connection deepens in ways neither of them expected.
The chemistry between them is undeniable, and the spice definitely delivers. What I loved most, though, was seeing the way Kieran slowly changes. A man whose life has always revolved around death finding something—someone—worth protecting was such a satisfying journey to watch.
Cambria Hebert once again delivers her signature blend of humor, emotion, swoony moments, and unforgettable characters. If you enjoy romances with humor, action, strong chemistry, and characters who perfectly balance each other out, The Hazard and the Hitman is definitely one to add to your list.
I’m definitely not ready to say goodbye to this world yet, so I cannot wait to dive into Ghost and Rett’s story next.

She considers math human torture and has an irrational fear of chickens (yes, chickens). You can often find her running on the treadmill (she’d rather be eating a donut), painting her toenails (because she bites her fingernails), or walking her chihuahuas (the real bosses of the house).
