Review: The Grump Next Door by Kendall Ryan

You know those books you start thinking, this will be a cute little romcom, and then suddenly you’re fully invested, emotionally attached, and grinning at your Kindle at 1AM?

Yeah. This was that book for me.

Dean Whitaker is a divorce attorney. He doesn’t believe in happily ever afters — he drafts the paperwork when they fall apart. So hosting his brother’s wedding at his own estate? Already ironic. Letting the relentlessly cheerful wedding planner move into his guest house for the week? Pure suffering… at least in his opinion.

And then there’s Poppy.

Poppy Monroe is sunshine — not in a loud or naive way, but in that determined, this wedding will be perfect even if it breaks me kind of way. She has her checklists, her glitter pens, and a level of optimism that clashes spectacularly with Dean’s controlled, whiskey-and-logic world.

From the start, their dynamic just works. The banter is sharp, the irritation is real, and the tension is constant. You can feel that push and pull in every interaction — that thin line between wanting to argue and wanting something neither of them is ready to admit.

What makes it even better is how naturally it unfolds. Between wedding chaos, unexpected disasters, and yes… a goat named George causing absolute mayhem, they’re forced into each other’s space in a way that slowly chips at Dean’s walls. And the shift isn’t dramatic — it’s subtle. It’s in the small moments. The noticing. The helping without being asked. The looks that last a second too long.

The slow burn here is done so well. Nothing feels rushed. You sit in the tension with them. You feel the hesitation. And when things finally tip from irritation into something deeper, it feels earned.

This book made me laugh more than once, definitely swoon, and completely fall for a grumpy divorce lawyer who never saw it coming.

Warm, funny, chaotic in the best way — and exactly the kind of romcom that sneaks up on you.

Happy reading!
