Review: The Last Guy on Earth by Sarina Bowen

Sarina Bowen has done it again! The Last Guy on Earth is everything I love about her hockey romances—heartfelt, emotional, and full of sizzling chemistry. This book is a second-chance, forbidden coach/player romance that hooked me from the first page.

Jethro Hale, an elite goaltender nearing the end of his career, gets traded mid-season to a team coached by none other than Clay Powers—his ex-teammate, ex-roommate, and, most importantly, his ex-love. The history between these two is complicated, full of unresolved tension and buried feelings, and now they’re forced into close proximity on and off the ice. The result? A story packed with longing, heartbreak, and a slow-burn romance that makes your heart ache in the best way.

Jethro and Clay are dynamic opposites who bring out the best (and worst) in each other. Jethro, the grumpy veteran with a tough exterior but a vulnerable heart, completely stole my heart. And Clay? The youngest coach in the league, juggling the pressures of his career while also being the guardian to his tween nephew, made him even more lovable. Their chemistry is electric—full of tension, banter, and deep emotions that had me rooting for them from the start.

One thing I love about Sarina Bowen’s writing is how seamlessly she blends romance and sports. The hockey scenes feel authentic and engaging, adding more depth to the story. The book also masterfully incorporates tropes like second chances, forbidden romance, forced proximity, and even a touch of the single-dad (guardian) trope—all woven together beautifully to create an emotional and swoony read.

I also appreciated how the book tackles the reality of being openly queer in professional sports. While it’s a fictional setting, the themes of acceptance and navigating personal identity in a high-profile career felt incredibly relevant and well-handled.

If you’re a fan of M/M hockey romance, The Last Guy on Earth is an absolute must-read. It’s emotional, steamy, and full of heart, with a beautifully satisfying ending. I adored every moment of Jethro and Clay’s journey, and I couldn’t put this book down.

Thank you, Sarina Bowen, for once again delivering a romance that hits all the right notes. If this is the last book in the Hockey Guys series, it’s an incredible send-off—but part of me is still hoping for more!

Happy reading!
