Helena Hunting has done it again with ‘‘If You Need Me’’! This third installment in the Toronto Terror series brings us the swoon-worthy love story of Wilhelmina “Hemi” Reddi-Grinst and Dallas Bright—a perfect blend of enemies-to-lovers and fake engagement tropes wrapped in the delightful world of hockey romance. As someone who adores Helena’s writing, I can confidently say this book is pure magic, making Hemi and Dallas my favorite couple of the series and solidly placing them in my top three Helena Hunting couples of all time.
From the first chapter, this book pulls you in. Dallas has been hopelessly in love with Hemi since third grade, and his golden-retriever energy versus her bada*s queen vibes creates an irresistible dynamic. Hemi, the PR director for the Toronto Terror, is smart, fierce, and unapologetically herself—a woman who knows her worth but struggles with the idea that she might be “too much.” On the other hand, Dallas, a star hockey player with a heart of gold, has been quietly and deeply devoted to her for years, despite her lingering resentment from their shared childhood.
When a drunken social media post declares their (fake) relationship to the world, Hemi and Dallas are forced to navigate the chaos it creates—convincing friends, family, and colleagues of their “love” while grappling with their own growing feelings. The fake dating trope is executed flawlessly here, with heartfelt moments, sizzling chemistry, and plenty of laugh-out-loud scenes (anxiety boners and crochet peaches, anyone?).
But what truly sets this story apart is the emotional depth. Hemi’s journey of overcoming her insecurities, particularly the fear of being “too much,” is beautifully written. Her vulnerability is raw and relatable, and watching Dallas support her every step of the way is nothing short of heartwarming. He doesn’t just love her; he ‘sees’ her—her strength, her quirks, her fears—and he embraces all of it. The result is a love story that feels authentic and unforgettable.
I also loved catching up with the side characters who enriched the story. And then there’s the tantalizing setup for future books—Essie and Nate’s, Roman’s possible retirement and his connection with Alexandria, and Hemi’s brothers, Sam and Isaac, who are practically begging for their own spin-off series! Not to mention Connor Grace, Flip’s arch-nemesis turned Toronto Terror teammate—I’m dying to know what’s behind their animosity!
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Helena Hunting novel without amazing banter and scorching chemistry. Dallas’s devotion to Hemi shines in every interaction, and his dirty talk is a chef’s kiss. At the same time, Hemi holds her own, showing her strength in both her personal and professional life. Together, they balance each other perfectly, creating a dynamic that is equal parts sweet and spicy.
If you’re looking for a book that will make you laugh, cry, and swoon, ‘If You Need Me’ is it. Helena Hunting masterfully combines humor, heart, and heat in a story about love, trust, and second chances. Whether you’re a fan of hockey romances or just love a story with unforgettable characters and a captivating romance, this book is a must-read.
