‘The Accidentals’ by Sarina Bowen

When it comes to jumping into books blind Sarina Bowen books are safe bets for me. I usually don’t even read the blurb to know that I will enjoy reading every word. As for YA books, I don’t read them that much any more. I think I am little old for YA 🙂 and I don’t enjoy it as much as I used to. However, I’m floored by how much I loved this book! I love how Sarina write characters that in some ways you can always relate and love. From the very first page I was pulled into the story and I couldn’t stop reading it. So I am happy to say she ROCKED her Young Adult debut.

Rachel grew up with a single mom. Her dad is a famous musician, who she never met until her mom’s death. For 17 years, Rachel dreamed about meeting her dad, Frederick, aka Freddy Ricks but now she doesn’t know how to accept and forgive him. Overnight Rachel’s life turned upside down and while she has to deal with her grief, she is also all alone and scared. Other than her mom, Haze was the only person she had almost all her life. Haze, who is bad boy best friend, has been Rachel’s friend since 2^nd grade but their friendship started to become something more while her mom was in hospital. Before starting boarding school in fall, she decides to leave Florida and Haze behind to spend the rest of the summer in LA with Freddy. She hangs on to her anger towards Freddy like a life line because now that her mom is gone she feels guilty for every minute she made her upset because of him. My heart broke for Rachel and some parts I read with a lump in my throat.

Even though, Freddy and Rachel have a rocky start, I loved how their relationship grow into something beautiful. It wasn’t an easy road but they both needed time to find their footing and get to know each other. Freddy started his relationship with his daughter as friends because he didn’t know how to be a father but later in the story his paternal side grew just like their relationship. It was great to see Rachel becoming from a lonely person to a person who has people around her that care for her. Growth of her friendship with her roommate Aurora and sweet, sexy, nerdy Jake was also amazing to read.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading ‘‘The Accidentals’’. All the characters added a different spice to the story despite their flaws and past mistakes, you will fall in love with them. Sarina Bowen’s first YA novel was sweet, inspiring, funny and heartwarming. You will literally feel all the emotions at one point or another. I highly recommend you to read this amazing story.
